Gardener trimming green bush

What Are Some of the Tools Used by Arborists?

Tree service, especially felling a tree, can be a risky business. Even pruning and trimming a large old tree can be hazardous. Over the years, people have constantly improved those tools and techniques that make tree work safer. Here are some tools used by today’s tree professionals.

The Chainsaw

An indispensable tool used by pros and amateurs alike, the chainsaw makes easier work of cutting through large limbs and even good-sized tree trunks. Though they’re needful in tree care and removal, chainsaws themselves can be dangerous if they’re used improperly. That’s why professional arborists are trained in the use. Chainsaws can be powered by gas, electricity, or lithium batteries.

Personal Protective Equipment

Personal protective equipment is a must when it comes to any type of tree service. This equipment includes:

  • Safety goggles
  • Ear protection
  • Work gloves
  • Work boots
  • Helmets
  • Face shields
  • Overall chainsaw protective clothing

Axes and Hatchets

Hatchets and axes are pretty much the same tool, but a hatchet is smaller. They’re good at cutting smaller branches, clearing away the undergrowth, splitting smaller pieces of wood, and general clean up.

Rigging Equipment

Rigging is necessary if the arborist is going to fell, prune, or otherwise maintain a large tree. It’s necessary if the arborist is going to perform a precarious task such as sectional dismantling of a tree. Rigging equipment includes tools such as pulleys, harnesses, carabiners, climbing spurs, ring and eye slings, ropes, and cable hoists.

The Handsaw

Despite the chainsaw’s versatility, there are still times in tree care when the handsaw is the best tool to use. It can get into places, like that sharp angle between a limb and the trunk, that the chainsaw can’t quite handle, especially one of those large, eight-horsepower types. The handsaw is also the go-to when it comes to trimming and pruning and preparing firewood.

Ladders and Bucket Trucks

Bucket trucks make getting up to the highest branches easy, but if one’s not available, a ladder can also do the job. Sometimes a tree is in a place that’s too tight for a bucket truck to fit, and a ladder is the answer here as well. The one thing to remember is that there are different ladders for different kinds of trees. For example, tripod ladders are best used in orchards.
